Underground, Lost and Found Hints

The Mystic Monocle Magazine

The Letter

Clue 1

I would read this letter carefully if I were you. Not just because I wrote it, but also because it contains some very important information about what you need to do to get to the bottom of this case.

Clue 2

I have not given my team a copy of this letter because it is not part of the evidence that was found on Danny Compton. We have nothing else to add here. Concentrate on the other items as they will give you better leads.

(UK only)

The Business Card

Clue 1

We thought this might be some sort of code, but not sure what cipher they used to make it… have you noticed any ciphers in your research?

Clue 2

We’re pretty sure this code can be solved using one of the ciphers from the magazine

Clue 3

We have managed to decipher the code, and it reads: zero seven nine zero eight six eight seven seven three nine. We’re just working on what to do with it now.

Clue 4

07908 687739 - Looks like a phone number We’ve tried calling it, but the answer machine says to send a text.

Clue 5

We texted the number and it replied with “A hand, a band, a space between vessels… don’t blow the fuse.”

Clue 6

We believe that this means the score from the card game, the band from the gig flyer, and the space in the battleships game come together to make a 6 digit number. Also that they link to the picture of the plug - due to the mention of the fuse.

 The Business Card

Clue 1

We thought this might be some sort of code, but not sure what cipher they used to make it… have you noticed any ciphers in your research?

Clue 2

We’re pretty sure this code can be solved using one of the ciphers from the magazine

Clue 3

We have managed to decipher the code, and it reads: CURIOUSCATS.UK/CARD

We're just working on what this could mean...

Clue 4

Ok so it's a website... maybe visit it!

Clue 5

Sure enough - the website contains the text: “A hand, a band, a space between vessels… don’t blow the fuse.”

Clue 6

We believe that this means the score from the card game, the band from the gig flyer, and the space in the battleships game come together to make a 6 digit number. Also that they link to the picture of the plug - due to the mention of the fuse.

L.N.E.S Receipt

Clue 1

Not sure why Danny was carrying this receipt, but it looks like he’s been shopping somewhere. We haven’t quite worked out where yet though - maybe try to find out.

Clue 2

I wonder what LNES Stands for?

Clue 3

We think the receipt is from Live Neutral Earth Shoppe, but again not sure why he was shopping there and what cost £14?

Clue 4

It’s definitely for a Salt Rock Lamp from Live Neutral Earth Shoppe - another device, but how does that link to anything?

Clue 5

Live Neutral Earth are all wires that make up a plug - the salt rock lamp links to the plug photo.

Plug Wiring (Photo)

Clue 1

This plug looks wired wrong. The earth wire shouldn’t be meeting the live! Our agents are trying to determine the importance of the colours.

Clue 2

We think this might be something to do with the underground tube map. Maybe there are similar colours on there somewhere.

Clue 3

Our experts definitely think that this is a representation of the London Underground tubes in some way - with the Circle and District Line being yellow and green, and the Bakerloo line being brown. But where do they meet?

Clue 4

We’ve got this one now - it’s definitely Paddington. It’s the only spot on Danny’s map that the Circle and District line meets Bakerloo so that must be it!

Clue 5

This links to the text message: “… don’t blow the fuse.” and where else have we seen the names of the plug wires before: Live, Neutral, Earth?

Numbers on Lined Paper

Update

If you received this in your game as a photograph instead of a paper printout, then please click hereto view the new updated evidence.

Clue 1

This looks like another cipher of some kind - and some brands of car. We don’t think it’s any of the ciphers in the magazine though. Maybe it’s a simpler code than we thought… perhaps the letters of the alphabet are represented by numbers in some way?

Clue 2

Our agents have managed to find the code - it was indeed simpler than we thought! Each letter was represented by a number, from 1 - 26. Easy! But how does that relate to the cars?

Clue 3

The title is ‘What Three Words’ which is an online location website. We have visited ‘What Three Words,’ and the three locations it gives. No cars in sight.

Clue 4

Looks like three random locations, but all with colours in their names. how could this relate to the cars? I'm sure I noticed some cars elsewhere...

Clue 5

The What Three Words locations are Yellowstone National Park, Blue Lagoon in Iceland, and Green Bay - this equates to a yellow Porsche, a green Mercedes, and a blue BMW. This will help you with the colouring page. Try finding some colours to colour them in with!

Ciphertext on a Post-it Note

Clue 1

This code looks familiar, but where have I seen it before? Somewhere in the rest of the clues I’m sure.

Clue 2

We think that the code for this one might be in the magazine. We’re going to try some of the ciphers to see what works.

Clue 3

The diagrammatic cipher from page two of the magazine is giving us some good results right now, maybe give that a try.

Clue 4

We have “The Mushroom is at Oxford Circus.” Looks like that’s the answer, but what could the 6-digit code be for this one? Where else have we seen a mushroom?

Photo

Card Game

Clue 1

This looks like a game, but what are they playing? Looks like some sort of board in the background - maybe one for pegging?

Clue 2

We have worked out that they are playing cribbage! How do you score in the game?

Clue 3

It’s a game where you get points for different combinations. 2 points for every possible combination that adds up to 15, 2 points for a double, and 1 point per card for a run of mixed suits. The card on the pile counts as part of the hand.

Clue 4

We make this 24 points - two pairs for 4 points, 4 fifteens for 8, and 4 runs of three for 12. This number must be part of something bigger.

Clue 5

This answer is the ‘hand’ in the text message: “A hand, a band, a space between vessels”: 24_ _ _ _

Number Puzzle

Clue 1

We’re fairly certain this is some kind of puzzle, and the pieces need to be cut out.

Clue 2

Although our agents are struggling with this, they have managed to get a couple of 5’s together, and some other lower numbers - maybe there is another clue that has similar numbers in it, but we haven’t found it.

Clue 3

Looks like we don’t need all the pieces to get the number. We only need the numbers that fit together perfectly.

Clue 4

Perhaps the Hot Tips card could have this number on it somewhere - are there any columns of numbers which have two 5’s together?

Clue 5

The answer is 551231. Our agents worked all night for that one.

London Underground Map

Clue 1

Danny’s targets are definitely on here somewhere.

Clue 2

We can’t give you more info than that until we solve the other clues

Clue 3

Seriously, this is just a map.

Clue 4

The stations are on here, but if you think the BBB would give us the answers that easily you’ve underestimated them.

It was a pleasure to burn…

Clue 1

These look quite novel to us.

Clue 2

I think I’ve seen an article about the research of the evidence about the extent cats can read.

Clue 3

We think these are the opening lines from books, the only part of a book cats can read.

Clue 4

Could the books have numbers associated with their titles? Perhaps replace the lines with the numbers and see if a sum appears. Make sure you do the sum in the correct order.

Clue 5

These are the first lines of 3 books - 1984, Fahrenheit 451, and Catch 22. Replace the lines with the numbers from the titles and you get 451 (1984 - 22). Always do the brackets first, so 1984 minus 22 = 1962. Multiply that by 451 and we have the answer to this one: 884862. Another code cracked.

Clue 6

Where else on the internet have we seen a cat?

Hot Tips

Clue 1

We’ve been looking at this long and hard.

Looks like we need a 6 digit number in order to get an answer here.

Some of these numbers look familiar…

Clue 2

We found a clear link between the Hot Tips and the big number puzzle - two 5’s next to each other!

We’re sure that this might help.

Clue 3

We’re making good progress on this one - the two 5’s led us to believe that the answer to the number puzzle must be one of the numbers in the far right column of the Hot Tips card.

That will give us two patterns - and therefore two horses from the horse racing card.

Clue 4

The number from the number puzzle will give you the answer to this one.

Use it to find the two patterns for horse one and two.

Then check the horse card to find out which those horses are.

Horse Racing Card

Clue 1

We suspected that the BBB had links to UK horse racing somehow, and this damn near confirms it! Maybe there are some useful symbols or shapes hidden on this card somewhere.

Clue 2

Our agents have managed to link the shapes on the jockey’s jerseys to the shapes on the Hot Tips card - but all the horses have the same odds, so we’re not sure which horse is first, and which is second. Looks like we need a 6 digit number from somewhere to find out which horse is which.

Clue 3

Our top detective managed to find a link between the horses and the word caterpillar puzzle - we think that the horse’s names might come in handy there. Maybe the number will come from the big number puzzle?

Clue 4

The horses are Reggie Braveheart and Snappy Anorak. The number from the number puzzle dictates which horse is first, and which is second, by the patterns on the jockey’s jerseys. These names need to be used somewhere…

Gig Flyer

Clue 1

Last time I went to a music festival was back in ‘98 when you could climb over the fences with your day bag. The younger agents inform me that this is a flyer for a musical act.

Clue 2

Yes, definitely a flyer for a band.

Clue 3

The band is called zero 7 - or ‘07’

Clue 4

Have you texted Barry yet?

Clue 5

This answer is the ‘band’ in the text message: “a hand, a band, a space between vessels”: _ _ 0 7 _ _

Colour Palette

Clue 1

These colours must be useful somewhere. Where else did I see something about colours?

Clue 2

Ah yes, the colouring page, these will definitely be used for the colouring page.

Clue 3

Each colour has a number. Perhaps, when you have worked out which colour each car should be, you’ll know what colour reference number to use.

Clue 4

The Porsche is yellow (60492), the Mercedes is green (73399) and the BMW is blue (10435).

Caterpillar / Food Cards

Clue 1

Looks like the caterpillars should line up in a certain order. Where else have I seen a caterpillar?

Clue 2

We’ve managed to line up the caterpillars, and that gives us a very particular order for the food items. Now where have I seen that order before, and what’s missing?

Clue 3

We have pieced together in this order - one piece of chocolate cake, one ice cream cone, one pickle, one slice of swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, (a question mark), and one slice of watermelon.

Clue 4

That was one very hungry caterpillar. We haven’t tried Googling this yet but I think that will be our next step to find out what this hungry caterpillar ate.

Clue 5

We found another device - it was a cupcake. This was the 9th item eaten by the Very Hungry Caterpillar on Saturday in the book - The Very Hungry Caterpillar, just before he turns into a butterfly. We have reason to believe that this clue links to the other caterpillar clue - the Word Caterpillar.

Paper Slip

/Barry Briggs

Clue 1

Can’t say I know much about this one. Looks like a cloud to me! Our technicians have run this image through software and we think it might be an online audio platform. I’m sure I saw it when I was flicking through the magazine…

Clue 2

We have worked out that this is a link to Barry Brigg’s Soundcloud account - you can access it by typing soundcloud.com/barrybriggs into a browser search bar. But why? What can Barry’s Soundcloud account help us with?

Clue 3

Barry is following various people - most of which are wild goose chases. There must be one that is helpful.

Clue 4

In the list of artists that Barry follows there is an artist that gives the clues to the battleships puzzle.

Clue 5

The targets are: B4, F7, H6, I9, J8, G3, C1, H7, H4, I7, E7, D2 - try filling those out on the battleships grid.
